    • The lecture title is based upon the Maya Angelou quote: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
    • Stories hold power. “Those who tell the stories rule the world,” says a Native American (Hopi) proverb. A picture is worth a thousand words, but science tells us video is worth 1.8 million. Television (and all moving pictures) are the among the most powerful forms of storytelling.  Actions of the media and advertising industries matters. If society wants to create a more inclusive world, it’s crucial to change the narrative.
    • In this 45-50 min lecture based upon a New York University undergraduate class he designed and delivered, Court Stroud walks the audience through media and advertising milestones for historically-marginalized groups. He uses examples from the past 70 years to show why it’s crucial to have racial diversity in the decision-making process, the importance of allies — and why media and advertising can and often has often moved the country closer to a more inclusive culture. The lecture concludes with examples of how the media/ad community has also stalled progress of diversity and may again if we let down our guard.
